ABOUT US
We are a group of fellow COPD sufferers, caregivers and others
interested in this disease. Our online community is devoted to
helping one another to live the best life possible with this
debilitating illness through interactive support.
As many of us have found, COPD is a disease of many faces,
contradictions and components. Therefore, our diversified community
is here to share its combined wealth of knowledge and information,
so we may all become well-informed patients and take control of our
disease rather than letting this disease control us.

TRANSPLANT: SENSE OF WELL-BEING MAINTAINED
The psychological well-being of patients after lung transplantation
is not significantly different from that in the general population,
results of a small study suggest. However, increased psychological
distress was found in a subgroup of transplant patients. Dr. Lutz
Goetzmann and colleagues from University Hospital Zurich examined
the psychological state of patients who had undergone lung
transplantation, and compared it with data obtained from the average
population. In addition, they assessed correlations between
psychological and physical parameters. See Story:

STEROID PUFFS DON'T UP FRACTURE RISK
In the short term, the risk of nonvertebral fracture is not
increased in older adults with asthma or COPD who use inhaled
corticosteroids (ICS), a study shows. "Concern about nonvertebral
fracture risk should not strongly influence the decision to use
recommended doses of ICS for adults patients with asthma or COPD,"
study authors write in the journal Chest. See More:

OBESITY, ASTHMA - IS THERE A LINK?
There has been a documented increase of asthma worldwide during
the last 40 years. Obesity has been identified as a potential risk
factor for asthma, but the results from different studies are not
consistent. Further, from a cross-sectional study design it is
difficult to know what is the hen and what is the egg. Subjects with
asthma may be obese because of limitations in physical activity due
to asthma. See Story:

CDC: GO AHEAD AND WIDEN FLU SHOTS
Fearing that a flu vaccine shortage may turn into a glut, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said more people
should get shots so the vaccines don't go to waste. Many regions
have reported flu vaccine is going unclaimed. Agency officials fear
if doses of vaccine go unused, more people will catch the flu and
manufacturers will be reluctant to make more doses for next year.
"What we are going to encourage the states to do is to continue to
focus their efforts on making sure that we get the high-priority
individuals vaccinated," a CDC spokesman said. See Story:

HELIOS MARATHON PORTABLE OXYGEN UNIT
Puritan Bennett announced availability of the Puritan Bennett HELiOS
Marathon (H850) Portable Oxygen Unit, a product line extension
of the popular HELiOS Personal Oxygen System. The HELiOS Marathon
is the first HELiOS portable liquid oxygen unit to provide patients
with a range of continuous flow settings as well as the option to
operate in "demand flow" mode, which conserves oxygen during
exhalation. Now oxygen therapy patients, who may not have
previously qualified for the HELiOS system due to the need for
higher oxygen levels provided by continuous flow, can enjoy new
levels of comfort, convenience and mobility with the HELiOS Marathon
unit. See Press Release:

HOME MONITORING SYSTEM TRIALS TO BEGIN
ALR Technologies Inc. announced the new home monitoring product
they began developing in mid-2004 is now completed and product
trials will soon begin. The ALRT Home Neb Monitoring system can
allow physicians or other health care providers to monitor patients'
use of nebulizers in the administration of medications for treatment
of conditions, such as COPD, asthma, emphysema and bronchitis.

FIGHTING FOR BREATH: PULMONARY FIBROSIS
Matt Kamasz has been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

STUDY: SMOKING HARMS WOMEN MORE THAN MEN
Cigarette smoking is more harmful to women than to men, cutting
more than a decade off female smokers' life expectancy, but much
less for their male peers, Dutch government research suggested.
Statistics agency CBS said a comparison of the numbers of Dutch
who died of lung cancer in 2003 and smoking trends showed the
habit cut a Dutch woman's life expectancy by 11 years, versus
three for a man. See Story:

CIGARS, CHEW AS BAD AS CIGARETTES
People shouldn't be fooled by the sophisticated advertising for
cigars. If they are knowledgeable about the effects of cigar smoking
they won't buy the hype. Here are some facts from the American
Lung Association (ALA) to consider. Cigars are not required to
carry the same health warnings on the packs as cigarettes and chew
tobacco yet a cigar can have considerably more nicotine and tar than
a cigarette and produce about 30 times more carbon monoxide.

PANEL: SCREEN MALE SMOKERS FOR ANEURYSM
Former or current male smokers between 65 and 75 years old
should receive an ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic
aneurysm, recommends the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm, which kills more than 9,000 Americans
each year, is an abnormal ballooning within the abdomen of the
aorta, the major artery that runs from the heart. Experts estimate
that between 59 percent to 83 percent of patients experiencing this
type of aneurysm die before reaching the hospital. The task force
noted that close to 70 percent of men between 65 and 75 years of
age have been smokers at some point in their lives and would benefit
from an ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm. This is
the first time the task force has made such a recommendation, which
appears in the Feb.1 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

STUDY: DAMP HOUSING, RESPIRATORY HEALTH

to the effects of damp housing than men are. See Abstract:

ALA INFORMATION ON CHRONIC BRONCHITIS
The bronchi are air passages connecting the windpipe (trachea)
with the sacs of the lung (alveoli) where oxygen is taken up by
the blood. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi causing
excessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls.
Many people suffer a brief attack of acute bronchitis with fever,
coughing and spitting when they have a severe cold. Chronic
bronchitis, however, is the term applied when this coughing and
spitting continue for months and return each year, generally lasting
slightly longer each time. Undue breathlessness on exertion is
eventually noticed, due to obstruction to air flow in the air
passages caused by swelling of the bronchial wall and the presence
of mucus that cannot be cleared. See More:

TEST YOUR HOME FOR RADON
Radon is an invisible, odorless gas that is the second leading cause
of lung cancer. A simple test can tell you if you have elevated
radon levels in your home. Do-it-yourself short-term (3-7 day) radon
test kits are sold at hardware stores and some departments of health
and are also available from the National Safety Council at
http://www.nsc.org/ehc/radon/coupon.htm. Most are less than $15
and include laboratory analysis with the upfront cost. Testing your
home is simple, but it is important to closely follow the
manufacturer's instructions. Your test results will be sent to you
after you mail in your sample and the lab processes your kit.
The EPA has important information on how to test and fix your home
if you have elevated levels of radon at http://www.epa.gov/radon/.
If you are building a house, you can make your home less likely to
have dangerous radon levels from the start. American Lung
Association Health House guidelines recommend using EPA's guidance
to build radon resistant houses, at
http://www.epa.gov/radon/construc.html
