-----ABOUT US
We are a group of fellow COPD sufferers, caregivers and others
interested in this disease. Our online community is devoted to helping
one another to live the best life possible with this debilitating illness
through interactive support.
As many of us have found, COPD is a disease of many faces,
contradictions and components. Therefore, our diversified
community is here to share its combined wealth of knowledge
and information, so we may all become well-informed patients
and take control of our disease rather than letting this disease
control us.
-----EDITORIAL COMMENTS
There isn't a day that goes by when we don't hear about health
stories and new studies about the dangers of osteoporosis, a
disease in which the bones become extremely porous, are subject
to fracture and heal slowly.
Although osteoporosis is typically associated with post-menopausal
women, men also are at risk. Many studies have identified a link
between increased risk of osteoporosis and use of corticosteroids,
which are commonly prescribed in the treatment of COPD.
In one study, those taking either inhaled or oral corticosteroids
were found to have a ninefold higher risk of osteoporosis than
the general population.
This issue focuses on osteoporosis and tips on what we can do
to keep our bones as healthy as possible. Health experts advise
that those with COPD have a bone-density scan, especially for
patients on steroid-based medications.
We welcome your input and participation in our newsletters and
will review for publication any pertinent information you wish to share
with others on COPD and related topics. If you wish to contribute to the
newsletter, please contact us at
Newsletter@COPD-International.com
Yours in health ...

-----NEW LUNGS: HOW ONE MAN BEAT THE ODDS
Charlie Tolchin, born with the lung-destroying disease cystic fibrosis,
received two healthy lungs from a 13-year-old accident victim. This is
his story on how he beat the odds thanks to a remarkable series of
medical achievements. See Story:

-----INFECTIONS LINKED TO FAULTY BRONCHOSCOPES
This study claims that the large outbreak of P. aeruginosa infections
in patients who underwent bronchoscopy was caused by a loose
biopsy-port cap in the bronchoscopes. Instrument safety and
surveillance methods for bronchoscopy must be improved, and better
recall procedures needed for medical devices. See Details:

-----DUTCH STUDY TO FOCUS ON SMOKING VACCINE
The University of Maastricht in the Netherlands announced that it will
begin a two-year study of an anti-smoking vaccine, NicVAX. The
vaccine, which is injected, is derived from nicotine itself. See Details:

-----GlAXO THREATENS TO STOP SALES TO CANADA
In response to the growing popularity of cheaper Canadian drugs
among U.S. consumers, GlaxoSmithKline has threatened to stop
supplying wholesalers and retailers in that country unless they cease
their cross-border sales. See Story:

-----SUPPORT KEY TO COPING WITH COPD
The more coping skills COPD patients can use, the more likely it
is that they will be able to maintain, control and cope effectively with
their disease, lessening the chances psychological problems.

-----BONING UP ON OSTEOPOROSIS
Osteoporosis is called the "silent disease" because you may not
notice any symptoms. People can lose bone over many years, but
not know they have osteoporosis until a bone breaks.
Osteoporosis is preventable. A diet that is rich in calcium and vitamin
D and a lifestyle that includes regular weight-bearing exercise are the
best ways to prevent osteoporosis. See More:

-----CORTICOSTEROIDS RAISE RISK OF FRACTURES
In a study of older persons, UK investigators have found that recent use
of inhaled corticosteroids was associated with a dose-related increase
in hip fracture. American researchers have also found the same results
in clinical studies. See Study:
http://www.health-news.co.uk/showstory.asp?id=103486
-----"OSTEODIET" NEW APPROACH TO HEALTHY BONES
The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined osteoporosis as the
second leading health care problem after cardiovascular disease. A new
European funded project - called 'Osteodiet' - will set out to investigate
dietary strategies for its prevention. See Details:
http://www.foodnavigator.com/news/news.asp?id=6620
-----A NEW TAKE ON CALCIUM
Calcium is known for its role in keeping bones strong, but research
now points to two other possible health benefits: weight control and
lower risk of some cancers. If further study supports these findings, it
could create even greater concern that only one-third of Americans
meet their calcium needs. See Report:

smoking, researchers say. See Story:
