-----ABOUT US
We are a group of fellow COPD sufferers, caregivers and others
interested in this disease. Our online community is devoted to
helping one another to live the best life possible with this
debilitating illness through interactive support.

As many of us have found, COPD is a disease of many faces,
contradictions and components. Therefore, our diversified
community is here to share its combined wealth of knowledge
and information, so we may all become well-informed patients
and take control of our disease rather than letting this disease
control us.

-----EDITORIAL COMMENTS
When most people are diagnosed with COPD, they are usually at a
stage when the damage done to the lungs is irreversible. Therefore,
the initial diagnosis typically leaves patients stunned, afraid and
confused about what the future may hold.

The fact is that there is much we can do to slow the progression of
our disease, especially through knowledge. We can never learn enough
about this finicky disease that seems to affect people in different,
yet similar ways.

Under Features Articles is an excellent link sent to me by a
subscriber.  It is filled with extensive information on COPD.

We welcome your input and participation in our newsletters and
will review for publication any pertinent information you wish to
share with others on COPD and related topics. If you wish to
contribute to the newsletter, please contact us at

Yours in health ...

Susie

-----CLUSTER OF GENES LINKED TO ASTHMA
Recently Reuters and USA Today reported on a new study conducted
by researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and
published in this month's issue of the Journal of Clinical
Investigation in which scientists discovered a cluster of 291 genes
linked to asthma.

According to the article, more than half of the mouse genes found
in the study had never before been linked with asthma. The article
says that this finding may open the door for new ways to study and
treat asthma.

In addition, the researchers assert that one of the newly linked
genes, called arginase, may play a particularly significant role in
asthma and may provide a good target for new asthma treatments.

According to the article, experts are using the study to rethink the
entire concept of asthma. Rather than being understood as one
illness, asthma may now become a more general term to describe
hundreds of different manifestations of the disease. The article
asserts that human studies still need to be done, but the findings
demonstrate that asthma may be much more complex than what has been
thought and this may result in significantly new approaches to
treating and diagnosing it.

-----NUMBER OF LEGIONNAIRES' CASES RISING
The number of reported cases of Legionnaires' disease has risen
sharply this year, baffling federal and state health officials. The
number of cases of legionellosis reported to the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this year totaled 624 as of
last week, compared with 436 for the corresponding period last year.

While the disease can affect anyone, middle-aged and older persons
are at highest risk, particularly smokers and those with chronic
lung disease. Also at increased risk are those whose immune systems
are suppressed by medications or by diseases like cancer, diabetes
and AIDS. See Story: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/13/national/13LEGI.html

-----CONTROLLING ANGER BEFORE IT CONTROLS YOU
Anger is generally not a comfortable emotion, but it is a normal,
healthy emotion. Anger helps us respond to threats. While it is
natural to strike out when we feel angry, this striking out involves
a choice to act on the anger. There are several ways to manage
problematic anger. See Tips:
http://mentalhealth.about.com/cs/selfhelp/a/angermgmt603.htm

-----DEPRESSION IN THE ELDERLY
Bereavement, sleep disturbance, disability, prior depression and
being female are all risk factors for depression among elderly
people, according to Canadian psychiatrists. See Story:
http://www.clinnix.net/news/article.php?id=3126

-----ANXIETY AND CANCER MAY BE LINKED
Anxiety may increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer,
according to a study by Norwegian researchers. See Story:
http://www.clinnix.net/news/article.php?id=3127

-----FDA TO REQUIRE ARTERY-CLOGGER LABEL
The U.S. government will require food makers to reveal the amount
of a potentially dangerous type of fat in their products. The move
is the first step in what officials are calling a renewed initiative
against obesity.

Trans fat has been linked to heart disease and obesity, and is so
harmful that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it cannot
establish a safe consumption limit. The new requirement does not go
into effect until 2006. (FDA) More on Trans Fats:

-----WOMEN BENEFIT MORE FROM QUITTING SMOKING
New findings from the Lung Health Study (LHS) indicate that, in
general, women's lung function improves significantly more than
men's after sustained smoking cessation. The results were published
in a recent issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology. See Press
Release: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/new/press/03-06-02.htm

-----EDITORIAL: PUTTING A PRICE ON LIVE ORGANS
The subject of paying living organ donors appears to be one of the
slipperiest of "slippery slope" issues, but a Nobel Prize-winning
economist not only endorses the practice, he's come up with some
prices. Editorial:

-----DEHYDRATION CAN BE LIFE-THREATENING
Did you know that dehydration can be deadly? If you don't drink
enough fluids, your muscles begin to get tired and you may have leg
cramps or feel faint. If you become severely dehydrated, there is no
longer enough fluid in your body to get blood to the organs, and you
may go into shock, which is a life-threatening condition. Even if
you don't feel thirsty, you should make sure you drink at least a
liter of water a day and more if you engage in physical activities.

-----OVEREATING OUT OF BOREDOM?
This link leads to things to do instead of overeating out of
boredom. Eating when you're bored might actually be a sign of stress
- you feel like you have so many things to do that you're avoiding
all of them, and are bored because of it. See Tips:

Scientists are predicting that the large mosquito population could

-----FIRST AID KIT FOR TODAY'S WORLD
Disaster preparedness takes more than duct tape. Today's disaster
kit contains all the traditional elements of a first aid kit and
expands it to include survival items that could make the difference
between life and death in the case of emergency. Experts say the
best way to cope with disaster is to prepare and have everything you
might need in one place. See Tips:

-----HEADACHES "CAUSED BY REPRESSED ANGER"
Bottling up anger was the biggest predictor of headaches in a study
carried out by researchers at Saint Louis University Health Sciences
Centre in the U.S. The researchers found repressed anger to be much
more likely than other common factors such as anxiety and depression
to give people headaches. They suggested several strategies to help
release tension, including taking several deep breaths to relieve
tension that might lead to headaches. (Financial Times 11/07/03)
