-----ABOUT US
We are a group of fellow COPD sufferers, caregivers and others
interested in this disease. Our online community is devoted to helping
one another to live the best life possible with this debilitating
illness through interactive support.

As many of us have found, COPD is a disease of many faces,
contradictions and components. Therefore, our diversified
community is here to share its combined wealth of knowledge
and information, so we may all become well-informed patients
and take control of our disease rather than letting this disease
control us.

-----EDITORIAL COMMENTS
It is with the deepest of regrets and great sorrow that we mourn the
loss of one of COPD-International's founders, treasurer and exercise
program coordinator, Billie Mahaffey. Billie died Friday, April 25,
as the result of a severe respiratory infection.

She will be missed by many, especially by the staff of COPD-
International, who relied on her wisdom, sense of fair play and
innate goodness that never wavered even in times of adversity.

This newsletter is in tribute to Billie, who tirelessly gave of her
time and support to all of us with lung disease. Her passion for
exercise and positive attitude spurred many of us to follow her lead
in hopes that we could all enjoy a better and more active lifestyle.

The main news story is again SARS, which continues to cause
a healthy dose of fear worldwide.

We welcome your input and participation in our newsletters and
will review for publication any pertinent information you wish to
share with others on COPD and related topics. If you wish to
contribute to the newsletter, please contact us at
Newsletter@COPD-International.com

Yours in health ...

Susie

The U.S. Nationwide Asthma Screening Program is to be held at more
than 300 locations across the country as part of the National Asthma
and Allergy Awareness Month in May.

There will be free screenings for the condition for adults and
children and advice from specialists on how to keep symptoms under

-----REVIEW OF ORGAN PROCUREMENT IN U.S.
A review of organ donation in the United States must begin with an
understanding of the system by which organs are procured. The first
section of this article provides an overview of the organ procurement
system, focusing on the processes and regional presence of organ
procurement organizations (OPOs).

The sections that follow provide first a historical review of
legislative and regulatory efforts to improve organ donation and then
an examination of trends in the recovery and disposition of organs.

-----TRANSPLANTS DOWN IN U.K.
There is a shortage of organs available for transplantation, according
to U.K. Transplant. The number of transplant operations rose slightly
last year but is still below the level of the mid-1990s despite more
than £3 million being spent on measures to increase donations. Sue
Sutherland, chief executive of U.K. Transplant, says, "We know many
more lives could be saved if only more people talked about organ
donation and registered their wishes on the organ donor register."

-----DNA TEST WILL GIVE DRUG ADVICE
Scientists predicted a revolution in medicine recently as they
announced a genetic test that screens a patient's DNA to discover
which drugs will and will not work.

The diagnostic DNA chip, the first of which will be released shortly,
can analyze a drop of blood to determine the most suitable medication.
Pharmaceutical company Roche, who developed the chip, says it can
match a patient with the right medicine within 24 hours, avoiding
months of trial and error and reducing the risks of side effects.

-----TRIBUTE TO BILLIE MAHAFFEY
We have all benefited so much from Billie's drive to help others. She
wore many hats as a founder, treasurer and respected member of the
governing committee that oversees the COPD-International Web site.

She was the driving force behind the exercise forum and weekly
exercise chats - an area that she developed based on her own
experiences after a serious prior illness.

Billie also had been a very active member of Better Breathers in
Oregon, where she resided. She also had volunteered in Day Surgery at
a hospital in Oregon and enjoyed working with the patients as they
were admitted.

Her guidance, cheer and enthusiasm will be deeply missed.

-----BILLIE'S LEGACY LIVES ON
Besides quitting smoking, exercise is the next best thing we can do to
keep our disease at bay. Below is a link to information, a chat
room and a message board - all of which Billie coordinated in hopes
of getting others involved in daily exercise.

-----HER FAVORITE EXERCISE TIPS
Billie was a fountain of inspirational knowledge when it came to
staying active. Below are links to a few of her favorite sites and
information on exercise, which she suggested others read to learn how
to improve their exercise habits.

-----WASH AWAY THOSE GERMS!
The most effective way to prevent the spread of infectious disease is
by washing your hands, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC). Yet it's estimated that one of every
three people doesn't wash up after using the restroom.

-----SMOKING RELAPSE DOES NOT MEAN FAILURE
Relapse is a return to smoking on a regular basis. Relapse is common
and supports the fact that tobacco dependence is a lifelong (chronic)
condition. It does not mean that you have failed. See Story:

Footprints

Last November, as a part of her Thanksgiving message to all of us here
on the COPD-International lists, Billie Mahaffey said:

"Thanks to everyone who left footprints in my life, I have much to be
thankful for.  You are all in my prayers!!!     Take Good Care"

Last Friday, in the early morning hours, she peacefully left her final
footprints here on earth. Billie's list of accomplishments over her
years are impressive: ranging from a district manager with 198
representatives under her, to Construction Contract Administrator
where she was Builder of the Year, in Santa Clara County, CA. in
l988.

As one of the Founders of COPD-International, our Treasurer and our
Exercise Forum leader she showed such a deep desire to help others,
combined with a very cheerful and enthusiastic outlook on life, and
the ability to guide us through tough times.

Using Billie's own words, "We have so much to be thankful for"
Yes we all do. She certainly left footprints on our lives, as she
encouraged us all to exercise.

Even greater though, are the footprints she left on our hearts
and minds, which are immeasurable and will be with us forever.

Her work will live on, carried on by others who have been touched by
her kindness, cheer and enthusiasm.
