-----ABOUT US
We are a group of fellow COPD sufferers, caregivers and others
interested in this disease. Our online community is devoted to helping
one another to live the best life possible with this debilitating illness
through interactive support.

As many of us have found, COPD is a disease of many faces,
contradictions and components. Therefore, our diversified
community is here to share its combined wealth of knowledge
and information, so we may all become well-informed patients
and take control of our disease rather than letting this disease
control us.

-----COPD ADVOCATE BILL HORDEN DIES
Bill Horden, known for his advocacy and vast knowledge in the
field of COPD, died early Sunday morning, March 30. His wife
of 29 years, Jackie, said he died peacefully in his sleep.

Known as "The COPD Advocate," he was one of the first to use the
Internet to provide support for COPDers with the goal of helping
us to lead the best quality of life possible with lung disease.

When Bill could no longer maintain his Web site, he gave COPD
International permission to established the Bill Horden Library,
which opened in September of 2002, and features all of his writings
and research.

Best known for the "COPD Survival Guide," this early pioneer of
COPD advocacy set the standards for providing online support and
information to those in need.

This issue is dedicated to Bill Horden for making all our lives
better than we ever dreamed possible with lung disease. His
everlasting words will continue as a guide for all those who follow.

We welcome your input and participation in our newsletters and
will review for publication any pertinent information you wish to share
with others on COPD and related topics. If you wish to contribute to the
newsletter, please contact us at Newsletter@COPD-International.com

Yours in health ...
Susie

-----SARS UPDATES
The spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) continues
to be a worldwide health threat as the number of suspected cases rise on
a daily basis, especially in Southeast Asia. Global health alerts remain in
effect, as scientists around the worldwide to try to identify the mysterious
illness. Below are links to SARS updates.

-----STUDY - STEROIDS GIVE BETTER ASTHMA RELIEF
People with mild to moderate asthma might want to stick with steroids
rather than switch to nonsteroidal drugs. That's the suggestion from
Canadian researchers who found the latter medications are less effective
for this group. See Study:

-----NEW HAYFEVER SHOT HAS LASTING EFFECT
Six injections of a new allergy vaccine over six weeks seems to fight
hayfever for more than one allergy season, according to a Johns
Hopkins study. See Details:

-----WEAKENED COUGH RELEX FOUND IN SMOKERS
Researchers say that men who smoke are less sensitive to cough-
inducing irritants, which may have important medical implications and
explain some of the health problems smoking brings. See Article:

-----SMOKING "SPEEDS UP" LUNG CANCER
U.S. researchers say smoking may not only cause lung cancers, but may
speed up their growth as well. Scientists at the Oregon National Primate
Research Center report nicotine may make the cancers more aggressive
by stimulating tumor cells to grow and divide. See Report:
http://www.health-news.co.uk/showstory.asp?id=109165

-----STUDY: LONG-TERM STEROIDS INCREASE HEART RISK
People on long-term treatment with high doses of anti-inflammatory
steroids are up to three times as likely to develop heart disease than
those who never take the drugs, Scottish researchers reported. See Story:

-----TECHNIQUE MAY HELP IN LUNG TRANSPLANTS
A new technique that protects lungs from damage appears to be a success
in rats and may one day improve lung transplant operations in humans,
according to this recent study.

-----COPD AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
Low-grade systemic inflammation was present in participants with
moderate to severe airflow obstruction and was associated with
increased risk of cardiac injury. This may in part explain the high
rates of cardiovascular complications in COPD. See Details:
http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/107/11/1514

-----AIR POLLUTION SPURS ASTHMA, ALLERGIES
In cities across America allergies and asthma seem to be worsening.
It's not that more plants are pollinating, experts say. Rather, it's the
high levels of diesel fumes and ozone polluting the air. See Story:

-----GENETIC RISKS OF EMPHYSEMA FOUND IN MICE
Certain genes in mice appear to influence the risk of developing
emphysema, a finding that may explain why some smokers - who
are at risk of the condition - remain disease-free, researchers said.

___________________________________________________________________

-----BILL HORDEN - MAY 1929 - MARCH 2003
Bill Horden, known online as the "COPD Advocate," did not take his
COPD diagnosis as a death sentence. He turned his positive energies
into the creation of an extraordinary Web site, COPDadvocate.

Bill was a pioneer of online support for those with COPD, inspiring
others to take control of their disease through knowledge, support
and advocacy.

His profound insights and strong convictions continue to give hope to
thousands of newly-diagnosed COPD patients who, afraid and scared,
turn to the Internet for information. On Bill's site, they found more than
information. They found hope instead of despair in one of Bill's best
known quotes: "COPD is not a death sentence."

He became a dedicated advocate in all areas of COPD, gaining
recognition and respect from medical professionals with his
"COPD Survival Guide," which has been reposted on the most
prestigious of medical sites.

Due to Bill's failing health, the COPDadvocate site went off line several
months ago. Fortunately, his years of work and hundreds of Web-site
pages teeming with his vast knowledge of COPD are not lost. His
work continues to be a source of inspiration to all of us - not only
to live well, but to help others do the same.

-----DIET CAN HELP ASTHMATICS BREATHE EASIER
Dietary adjustments can go a long way in helping asthma sufferers
breathe more easily, as well as for those with COPD. One common

_______________________________________________________________

A legend in our time has passed on...

Yesterday in the peace and the quiet of night, Bill Horden finished
his journey here on Earth. As one of our very first COPD advocates,
Bill was the early voice for COPDers, demanding to be heard. His
standards were simple - truthfulness, accuracy, help and guidance for
the COPDer. His tenaciousness was unmatched for the time, using
every means possible, from the press to governmental committees.

His knowledge and drive to help others through COPD advocacy
programs can never be replaced, but will continue to live on in the
legacy that he has left behind. Such writings as his "Survival Guide"
are timeless in nature, and accomplish all that he expressed to me -
namely his strong desire to help and educate the COPD sufferer.

Using Bill's own words, "I know I can't change the world, but it is a
wonderful feeling to know that I've made the path a little more friendly
for even one other person. (You might say it is my way of "lighting a
candle, rather than cursing the darkness.") As long as I feel I'm
succeeding at that, this will continue to grow and, hopefully, improve."

In the quote above, he refers to "lighting a candle." Bill Horden's efforts
and writings have lit far more than a candle. His drive and fire, passed
on through his writings, have lit torches around the world - inspiring
others to follow his pioneering efforts as voices for COPD, - and in
providing compassion, guidance and accurate information in support
for all.

His legacy lives on.
