-----ABOUT US
We are a group of fellow COPD sufferers, caregivers and others
interested in this disease. Our online community is devoted to helping
one another to live the best life possible with this debilitating illness
through interactive support.
As many of us have found, COPD is a disease of many faces,
contradictions and components. Therefore, our diversified
community is here to share its combined wealth of knowledge
and information, so we may all become well-informed patients
and take control of our disease rather than letting this
disease control us.
-----EDITORIAL COMMENTS
We at COPD-International are very fortunate to have been granted
the opportunity to provide the permanent home for Bill Horden's
timeless and valuable contributions to the COPD community.
In our Library, we have established The Bill Horden Wing, which
features all the writings of this "COPD Advocate." Best known for
the "COPD Survival Guide" and his former Web site called the
COPDadvocate, this early pioneer of COPD advocacy set the
standards for providing online support and information.
The vast majority of Bill's remarkable work remains timeless
and has been archived without change for its historical and
educational value, while portions that have become outdated
will be updated over the next few months.
This issue is dedicated to Bill Horden for making all our lives
better than we ever dreamed possible with lung disease.
We welcome your input and participation in our newsletters and will
review for publication any pertinent information you wish to share with
others on COPD and related topics. If you wish to contribute to the
newsletter, please contact us at
Newsletter@COPD-International.com .
Yours in health ...
Susie

-----GREEN TEA FOR ALLERGIES?
New evidence suggests that drinking the increasingly popular green
tea may provide some relief to allergy sufferers. Researchers in Japan
identified a compound in green tea that, in laboratory tests, blocks a
key cell receptor involved in producing an allergic response. See Details:

-----WHEEZING MAY NOT MEAN ASTHMA
This article reviews the differential diagnosis of wheezing and
provides guidelines for recognizing conditions that produce wheezing,
but are not asthma, citing other common and uncommon causes to
consider. It is a bit technical, but, nonetheless, interesting.

-----EXACERBATIONS ALTER LUNG FUNCTION
These results suggest that the frequency of exacerbations contributes to
long-term decline in lung function of patients with moderate to severe
COPD, ever reminding us to take good care of ourselves and stay as
healthy as possible. See Details

-----NATIONAL LUNG STUDY UNDER WAY
The National Cancer Institute is conducting a new study that will
involve 50,000 current or former smokers at 30 centers around the
United States. The study is intended to uncover whether two different
screening tests are effective in uncovering lung cancer before
symptoms start. For more information on the study or to find a center
near you, call 1-800-4-CANCER, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. (EST) or log onto
http://www.nci.nih.gov/nlst/.
Editor's Note: I suggest anyone interested in participating in this study
first go to the link listed above and read ALL the information. There are
risks you should be aware of before applying.
-----STUDY: CONNECTION BETWEEN COPD & BONE LOSS
A new study urges the importance of screening for osteoporosis
in patients with COPD. The association between the two is very
significant, according to a recent report.
Dr. Diane M. Biskobing of the Medical College of Virginia
stressed the importance of doctors screening for bone loss in
patients. She says as many as 36 percent to 60 percent
of patients with COPD also have osteoporosis. This condition
means they have low bone mass, which can lead to fractures.
Research shows most patients don't have any symptoms of the
disease, until they fall and fracture a bone.
She recommends patients be screened for osteoporosis when
they are given the diagnosis of COPD. Also, she believes
patients who are taking medications called glucocorticoid therapy
should be considered for preventive therapy for osteoporosis.
There are several treatments available to prevent bone loss.
They range from physical therapy to calcium and vitamin
supplementation to medications.
Editor's Note: Although a recent study showed no correlation
between inhaled corticosteriods and bone loss, it would be wise
to ask your doctor about a bone-density test because there are
many medications for COPD that can cause bone loss. Men, as
well as women, are at risk.
-----CALCIUM - TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING
Calcium and the importance of getting enough calcium in our diets
to maintain healthy bones is heard over and over. But what if the
body contains too much calcium? The condition is called hypercalcemia,
and, if left untreated, can wreak havoc in multiple organs in the body.

-----A TRIBUTE TO BILL HORDEN - COPD ADVOCATE
Bill Horden, known online as the "COPD advocate," did not take his
COPD diagnosis as a death sentence. He turned his positive energies
into the creation of an extraordinary Web site, COPDadvocate.
Bill was a pioneer of online support for those with COPD, inspiring
others to take control of their disease through knowledge, support
and advocacy.
His profound insights and strong convictions gave hope to thousands
of newly-diagnosed COPD patients who, afraid and scared, turned
to the Internet for information. On Bill's site, they found more than
information. They found hope instead of despair in one of Bill's best
known quotes: "COPD is not a death sentence."
He became a dedicated advocate in all areas of COPD, gaining
recognition and respect from medical professionals with his
"COPD Survival Guide," which has been reposted on the most
prestigious of medical sites.
Due to Bill's failing health, the COPDadvocate site went off line several
months ago. Fortunately, his years of work and hundreds of Web-site
pages teeming with his vast knowledge of COPD are not lost. His
work will continue to be a source of inspiration to all of us - not only
to live well, but help others to do the same.

-----FIRST-AID HELP
It was a stifling hot day and a man fainted in the middle of a busy
intersection. Traffic quickly piled up in all directions, so a woman
rushed to help him. When she knelt down to loosen his collar,
a man emerged from the crowd, pushed her aside, and said,
"It's all right honey, I've had a course in first aid."
The woman stood up and watched as he took the ill man's pulse
and prepared to administer artificial respiration. At this point she
tapped him on the shoulder and said,

-----CAJUN FINGER-LICKIN' CHICKEN FINGERS
This is one of Bill Horden's original recipes from his "SOB in the
Kitchen." He combined his knowledge of nutrition and love of
cooking, creating hundreds of healthy recipes.
If you need to waken your taste buds, this should do it.
Double the recipe if you want some great leftovers.
Ingredients
1 tbsp - all-purpose flour
1 tbsp - poultry seasoning mix (parsley, sage, rosemary,
and thyme)
½ tsp - garlic salt
½ tsp - fresh-ground blank pepper
1/8 tsp - cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
½ lb - boneless, skinless chicken breast,* patted dry and cut
into ½-inch strips.
3 tbsp - butter or Canola oil
*You may substitute chicken thighs, or use a combination
of meats.
Directions
Heat the oil in a large frypan, over medium heat. Combine all
dry ingredients in a resealable plastic bag and dredge the chicken
by shaking vigorously. Immediately add the meat to the fry-pan,
one piece at a time (so as not to cool the oil), and cook until done,
about eight minutes. Serve with cornbread. Serves 2.
